Say NO to the destruction of the West Eprapah Wildlife Refuge (WEWR)

It has recently come to our attention that Redland City Council has commenced planning works in relation to a walkway / cycleway through the West Eprapah Wildlife Refuge (WEWR).

We believe the walkway / cycleway is planned to start near Creekside Cct and run behind Apollo Crt, Ondine Crt, Intrepid Dve and culminate at the new cinema / restaurant complex at Lakeside Dve.

There has been no consultation that we are aware of between Redland City Council and residents on this matter.

The WEWR is home to numerous native flora and fauna, some of which is unique to the Redlands area.

Implementing a public walkway / cycleway through the WEWR will see the loss of native fauna such as koalas, swamp & redneck wallabies, whipbirds and the tusked frog, to name but a few.

The proposed walkway / cycleway will result in negligible commuting benefits for residents with massive impacts on our native wildlife.

Evidence of this type of public access through covert bushland shows an increase in offences such as:

* Public & underage consumption of alcohol,
* Wilful damage & destruction, such as graffiti,
* Assaults against the person (The North Brisbane bike-way sexual offences are a prime example), &
* Break & enter and thefts.

Regardless of whether you reside in the vicinity of the WEWR it is in your interest to send a message to Redland City Council that placing our few remaining wildlife refuges at risk is unacceptable.

Please sign our online petition to let Redland City Council know that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour that places our wildlife, ourselves, our property and our way of life at risk.

Our elected Councillors, also use the environment as a platform for re-election. Crs Peter Dowling & Toni Bowler have responsibilities in the Victoria Point area, which is the home of the WEWR.

The construction of walkways / cycleways through wildlife refuges is not reflective of environmentally aware principles.

Cr Peter Dowling nominates one of Redland City Council's achievements as, "Strategies to reduce graffiti."

This is Cr Dowling's graffiti reduction strategy...

The photos above were taken on the 9th August 2008. The graffiti has been done on the walls of commercial premises that back onto the Bunker Rd, Victoria Point West end of the WEWR.

The photo at bottom, right appears that Cr Dowling has approved the graffiti. If this is true, it would appear that Cr Dowling's graffiti strategy is one of "If you can't beat them, join them!"

What hope then does the WEWR have of effective Council management if this is what occurs when it is opened to the public?
