The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo is arguably one of Australia's most well known and popular birds. They are distinguished by their magnificent white plummage and sulphur yellow coloured crest.

They can live up to 80 years in captivity, make wonderful mimics and the female is distinguished by her red-brown eye colour, the males have a dark brown eye.

Diet

Predominantly seed, often much to the chargrin of grain farmers, as well as berries, nuts and roots.

Habitat

They prefer timbered habitat for shelter and nesting and co-habit well with humans.

Breeding

A clutch of 1 to 3 eggs are laid in a tree hollow and scribbly gums are particularly important in this regard. Both parents incubate (which takes about 30 days) and raise the chicks, with the chicks remaining with the parents to form a permanent family group.
