Rainbow Lorikeet
Trichoglossus haematodus

In General

The Rainbow Lorikeet is a common visitor to Redland's gardens and is unmistakeable with its beautifully coloured plummage.

A voracious nectar eater, you can encourage these birds to your garden by planting grevilleas and callistemon and other nectar rich flowering plants.

Diet

They are efficient nectar eaters, which gives them high energy levels. Their unique tongue with a brush like end makes them very efficient at extracting nectar from flowers. Will also eat seed.

Habitat

Open forest, rainforest, eucalypt forest and woodlands.

Breeding

Rainbow Lorikeets pair for life and reach sexual maturity about 2 years of age. They breed in the spring and use a tree hollow to lay usually 2 eggs. The female incubates the eggs and both parents help with raising the young.
