Pacific Black Duck
Anas superciliosa

In General

The Pacific Black Duck is often confused in the Redlands with the Australian Wood Duck, with the latter quite distinguishable with its smaller beak.

The Pacific Black Duck is about 56cm in length and is closely related to the Mallard and will interbreed when they come into contact with each other.

Diet

Aquatic plants, insects and small crustaceans.

Habitat

Occupies a wide variety of habitats and is extremely adaptable including lagoons, dams, creeks, and even tidal mudflats.

Breeding

Courtship involves an impressive display including head bobbing and wing flapping. Breeding is dependant upon preferable climatic conditions, including heavy rains. Often two clutches are laid in a year with the male assisting in the raising of young. A clutch size can number up to 16 eggs.
