Masked Lapwing

In General

A common sight in the Redlands often seen tenacioulsy defending their nest, which is nothing more than a depression in the ground. They often swoop at intruders who come too close to the nest or chicks, however they rarely make physical contact.

They have long red legs and a small yellow 'spur' on the shoulder of their wings.

Diet

Seeds, worms, insects and molluscs.

Habitat

Parks, open grassland and a variety of other habitats that are close to permanent water sources.

Breeding

Breeding occurs from July to September with birds pairing for life and both parents assisting in the raising of the chicks. A clutch consists of 3 to 4 eggs which hatch about 55 to 62 days later. The chicks are a mottled mixture of brown and are well camoflagued. Chicks lose their down about 6 to 7 weeks and stay with their parents for about 8 to 10 months.
