Laughing Kookaburra
Dacelo novaeguineae

In General

The Laughing Kookaburra is arguably one of Australia's most well known birds. Its laughing style of call is firmly entrenched as part of the Aussie bush. Sometimes confused with its cousin, the Blue-winged Kookaburra as their ranges overlap in South-East Queensland. The Blue-winged Kookaburra lacks the brown eye stripe of its cousin and its call sounds a lot coaser.

Diet

Insects, small reptiles, frogs and crustaceans.

Habitat

All habitat types with trees within its range.

Breeding

Pairs mate for life and eggs are laid in a tree hollow or termite nest located in a tree. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, with assistance from other Kookaburras within the group. Breeding takes place between August and January and the clutch size is up to 3 eggs.
