White Ibis
Threskiornis molucca

In General

The White Ibis is a relatively common sight in the Redlands and sometimes associated for its untidy scavenging habits. Characterised by its white plummage and long legs, its head and neck are black and featherless. The female is slightly smaller in body size compared to the male and has a shorter bill.

Diet

Invertebrates found both on land and in the water as well as human scraps.

Habitat

Prefers wet areas such as swamps, lagoons and flood plains but also parks and yards when food is available.

Breeding

The courting ceremony of this bird is quite unique. The male will position on a high branch where he will noisily call for a female. The male also bends the branch he is on at this time. When a female appears he will offer her a twig and if accepted the bond is formed. Nesting occurs in a colony with up to two broods raised each year.
