Crested Pigeon

In General

The Crested Pigeon is one of only two Australian pigeon species that possess an erect crest. The other is the Spinifex Pigeon. A common visitor to gardens in the Redlands, particularly when seed and water is on offer. They are often incorrectly called a Topknot Pigeon, which is another species entirely.

Diet

Grain, seeds and herbaceous plants.

Habitat

Commonly found near water and favour open dry grassland and open woodland.

Breeding

Breeding takes place all year round, but mainly in spring. Nesting takes place in trees with a simple nest constructed from sticks and twigs. Two eggs are usually laid, with both parents assisting with incubation and care of the chicks.
