Coastal Carpet Python
Morelia spilota mcdowelii

In General

The Coastal carpet python is arguably the most common snake found in the Redlands area. Being a python, it belongs to the Boidae family. It is non-venomous and kills its prey by restriction and suffocation.

This snake has an average length of 2.5 metres, although larger specimens up to 4 metres have been found. They are reasonably docile but will strike if they feel threatened

Diet

Mice, rats, birds and most other warm blooded prey it can catch, kill and swallow.

Habitat

Woodlands, eucalypt forest within close proximity to water.

Breeding

Sexual maturity is reached about 3 to 4 years of age. Males will combat in the wild for a partner. The female lays a clutch of about 25 eggs and like most reptiles the young are completely independent upon hatching.
