Brown Tree Snake
Boiga irregularis

In General

This is a nocturnal snake commonly found at night moving throughout trees and bushes looking for food. A rear-groove fanged, mildly venomous snake, although not considered dangerous to humans, it will strike repeatedly if threatened.

A maximum length of about 2 metres can be reached. It has a slender body with a large head and eyes. Colour can vary from brown/reddish brown with dark cross bands, while in tropical parts of its range it can be red and white banded.

Diet

Small mammals, other reptiles and small birds.

Habitat

Woodlands and rainforest.

Breeding

Breeding commences around October with the female laying a clutch of between 4 and 12 eggs. The eggs are laid in a moist environment with the young hatching about 65 days later.
